A Skin Tone

Since the day you told me why,
The tears spill out of your eyes
Since the day you showed me what resilience was
Since the day you explained to me what it is to live in a place
Where being a woman, of that color
Can put scars on your face?

I’ve been lying awake at night
Trying to figure out how to make the world a better place for you
Oh and I, have been crying alone, I’ve been crying
Cuz I’m lost in the pain of what the world has done to you
And I’m angry, can’t control this ache inside
And I’m ready, swear I’m ready to fight

Don’t know why they look at you
And think it’s okay to judge
Don’t they know your smile’s been purified to be pure gold?
And if anyone says anything different of that you don’t deserve everything on earth
I will fight them to the last
Don’t let them get to your pure soul

Chorus

Fight the words they say of you
And all those in your family
Fight the attitudes surrounding you
Saying you’re worth less than me
It’s a skin tone, not a soul
Just a skin tone not a soul
A skin tone not a
Soul
Chorus
How can I fight?
